MUSE

MUSE is the latest operatic collaboration between Raphael and librettist Caitlin Vincent, commissioned and developed by So-Chung Shinn.

Synopsis:

In 30 BC, Roman poet Virgil began writing The Aeneid, an epic poem that would consume him for the next 11 years of his life. Plagued by illness, Virgil would die before completing his work. On his deathbed, he begged for his unfinished manuscript to be burned. But his final wish was ignored. . .

MUSE follows Virgil in the final days of his life, as he desperately tries to complete The Aeneid. Encouraged by the Muses, Virgil throws himself into the story of Dido and Aeneas, despite the growing concerns of his wife Sabina. As Virgil slowly descends into madness, he becomes infatuated with his own creation, losing control of both his work and his grasp on reality.  Exploring themes of creation and inspiration, MUSE traces the blurry line between myth and muse and the legacies we leave behind.

Caitlin Vincent is an award-winning librettist and lyricist whose writing has been praised as ‘nuanced and honest’ (DC Theatre Scene), ‘intriguing’ (The Baltimore Sun), and ‘luminous’ (The Huffington Post).
